Following the Marie Kondo sensation, The Home Edit is a Nashville-based company set up by two professional home organizers (Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin) to create an easy-to-maintain functional system that is visually appealing. Weβd like to think weβre the Singaporean version of them as we share the same mission of empowering homeowners to create an organized and happier life.
Weβve compiled 8 best organizations tips from The Home Edit that you can apply to your next home organizing project β read on to learn more!
1. Figure Out Your Goals

Before you start organizing, you need to figure out what youβre organizing for. Come up with a game plan on how you want to use your space. Are you looking to create a more functional space at home or space for your kids to grow into?
There is no one way when it comes to organizing your home. You should organize your space based on you and your familyβs needs so that your system will be easily maintainable in the future. For example, if youβre a doctor, keep all your doctoral needs in one place so itβs easy for you to grab and go. Find out what is your goal at the end of your organization journey.
2. Editing (Or Decluttering) Is Inevitable

Editing (or decluttering) is an important step as you need to choose your priorities.
Do you want all your items or do you want more space? You canβt have both.Β

Start by taking everything out of your space. This helps you understand all of your inventory. From there, take time to assess all your items and eliminate those that you donβt need.
If youβre unsure whether you should throw something out or not, keep it in storage away from the main area and see if you or your family reaches out for it within a certain timeframe.
3. Creating Zones Is Key

Creating zones in your space is the key to form and function. Zones are designated spaces for a category of your similar items such as handbags or jewellery. It helps you make sense of the space that you have as well as serves as a visual reminder to declutter once your items flow out of the designated space.
Some unique zones used in The Home Edit:
- Backstock: It refers to anything extra that you have in your home β food supplies, cleaning supplies and more. Theyβre essentials that you need at home and itβs usually in the garage, or well, a storeroom in a Singapore context.

- Touch Access: Items that you work with regularly β phone bills, stationeries or even comfort food. Things that you want within your reach.
- Drop Zone: If youβre someone who enjoys switching out your handbags, create a drop zone for yourself β a space for you to organize your belongings as you transfer from bag to bag.

4. Containing Your Items

Containers are a great way to maximise the space that you have. You can choose from a range of different containers β from clear containers to woven baskets. Choose the container that fits you and your homeβs needs.
Tip: Make sure you carefully measure the space that you want to put your containers. This prevents you from buying containers that donβt fit!

However, if youβre someone who often forgets what you have at home, The Home Edit are big fans of clear containers. They believe that when you can see your items, you are more likely to use it. This will also give you an idea of what you have or donβt have at home so you can prevent over-purchasing!

4.1 Organize enclosed spaces

Cabinets, drawers and even refrigerators are great spaces to hide away items that you donβt want your guests to see. Over time, you will be too comfortable shoving things deeper inside and eventually youβll forget about the items at the back.
To prevent that from happening, you can use baskets and containers to act as a drawer to store your items.
4.2 Prevent overstuffing

Similar to how zones serve as a visual reminder for us to not overcrowd our designated space, containers give you a gauge of how many items can comfortably fit in your space. They provide an individual allotment for your items, preventing you from overstuffing.

Containers are a great storage solution for your homes, but be sure to not cram too many together. Give your containers room to breathe so it will be easy for you to grab it and go.Β

5. Colours Are Intuitive For Children

If you have kids at home, organizing items in the rainbow order is the most practical solution. Itβs intuitive for them, blue items go with the blue stack. It acts as a set of labels for kids β allows them to put away things by themselves and be self-sufficient. Theyβre never too young to start getting into the habit of organizing!
The rainbow organization method also represents everything The Home Edit stands for: A smart and organized system that is also aesthetically pleasing and beautiful to look at.
6. Systematise Your Miscellaneous Clutter

When decluttering your home, youβre bound to find some items that you cannot bear to part with or items that you hope to upcycle or reuse. You can keep those items but ensure that itβs kept in a systematic order.
- Sentimental clutter: Have a designated box to keep all your sentimental items such as pictures, cards and other keepsakes.
- Aspirational clutter: If you have clothes that you hope to fit back into, keep it inside a bin or storage box. Only keep those that are 1 size off and get rid of anything bigger than that.
